Employers in Saudi Arabia who withhold workers’ passports will be charged a SR2,000 ($533) fine under new rules from the government.

The Ministry of Labour and Social Development has announced that it will penalise employers who retain workers’ passports without their written consent, local media said.

The fine will be per each worker whose passport has been withheld, it was reported.

“The employer then has a month to rectify his status. The fine will double if the employer did not rectify the status in time,” an official was quoted as saying.
