Bulgarian, Turkish PMs Hold First Telephone Conversation

  • Bulgaria Diplomacy

In a telephone conversation held on Friday, Bulgarian Prime Minister Boyko Borisov and his Tuskish counterpart Binali Yildirim discussed the latest developments in both countries, the migrant crisis in Europe and the implementation of the agreement between the EU and Turkey.

Borisov personally congratulated Yildirim on his election as prime minister and extended his greetings to the people of Turkey on the occasion of the holy month of Ramadan. On behalf of himself and the government, he wished health, success and peace to the Muslims in Turkey.

The Bulgarian prime minister highlighted that Bulgaria can be example for ethnic tolerance on the Balkans. He added that the efforts of the government are directed towards ensuring safety in the state and equal conditions for all Bulgarian citizens. Borisov expressed hope that the contacts established during Yildrim’s tenure as transport minister will contribute to the good neighbourly relations between the two countries.

He noted that despite the dynamic situation and the heightened migrant flow on global scale, pressure on the Bulgarian-Turkish border is kept at minimum due to the joint efforts of Bulgarian and Turkish border officers.

Yildirim invited Borisov to attend the launch of the third bridge over the Bosphorus in August, which will provide opportunity for increasing connectivity between Europe and Asia. The telephone conversation coincided with the refusal of Sofia City Court (SGS) to register the DOST party on Friday.

DOST, which means “friend” in Turkish, is a splinter of the Movement for Rights and Freedoms (DPS), headed by former DPS chairperson Lyutvi Mestan, who was excluded from the party at the end of last year.
