In her first interview since EU Commission President Jean-Claude Juncker pointed her as one of his seven deputies last week, she added it will be up to her and to the national government to make sure the funds will be fully absorbed.
She told private national channel bTV the EUR 16 B should be used in a way promoting a more dynamic economy and the creation of jobs.
Georgieva noted the EUR 142 B budget of the 28-nation bloc carried “a big responsibility” and congratulated Bulgaria for having received the budgetary portfolio through Juncker’s choice.
“I am working [to ensure] that there is more growth in Europe, more jobs for the people, better education, and this means better control on the use of the money. Whether in Bulgaria or anywhere else, we have to be responsible to our taxpayers, it is they who are financing the projects”.
Georgieva also voiced her hopes she could give good advice where Bulgaria could vie to get more funding outside the EUR 16 B already projected.
She also thanked to the interim government for having embraced her candidacy.
